According to an anonymous source, Autocar, a British car magazine reported that Volkswagen Group through Audi had bought McLaren Group with the to secure a Formula 1 entry.

McLaren in their official website has reports that, “Mclaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed. McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group.”

German industry publication Automobilwoche first reported on Sunday that both Audi and BMW were interested in acquiring McLaren. The deal was that BMW is interested in just the road car division of McLaren while the four ring Audi was interested in the motorsports division of Audi to get easily into F1.

The truth is that McLaren has suffered financially and was able to raise £500 million from it’s investors through the covid-29 pandemic. Last month, McLaren’s CEO Mike Flewitt announced stepping down after eight years at the helm of control in the company.
